Two-way traffic restored on Route 623 bridge over I-64 in Goochland
Bridge rehabilitation project on track for early completion

GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) lifted the detour and restored two-way traffic on Route 623 at the bridge over I-64 in Goochland County this week. The $1.36 million bridge rehabilitation project began in Dec. 2005 and is expected to be complete later this month—more than five months ahead of the April 2007 target date.

Motorists exiting I-64 east at the Rockville-Manakin exit (exit 173) will now be able to travel north on Rt. 623 over the bridge. During construction, motorists wanting to travel north on Route 623 were detoured to Route 288 and Route 250 (Broad Street). VDOT maintained one lane of travel over the bridge for southbound travelers. This single-lane closure allowed more room for crews to work and decreased the overall project duration.

“This project has had the greatest impact on northbound Route 623 travelers and we appreciate everyone’s patience, especially local residents and businesses, as we provide a safer and smoother riding surface for the traveling public,” said VDOT’s Ashland Residency Administrator Rob Crandol.

The bridge, originally constructed in 1967, received a new concrete deck and repairs to the superstructure and substructure. Over the next two weeks, crews will finalize repairs, resulting in possible minor traffic impacts. A flagger will be on site to direct traffic during repair work.
