VDOT Completes Two Projects On-time and On-Budget in November
Savings amount to nearly $400,000

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va.— The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Richmond District continues to improve its delivery of on-time and on-budget construction and maintenance projects, completing two projects in November. Both of the projects came in on-time or ahead of schedule and were under budget. Collectively, the projects finished 27 days ahead of schedule and saved $398,266 or 12 percent of the originally allotted contract amount.

“This is an outstanding combined performance by VDOT employees, our private sector construction partners and our consultant inspectors,” said Christopher Winstead, P.E., VDOT district construction engineer. “Our team focus on results is returning measurable time and cost savings to the traveling public.”

The following two projects were completed in Nov. 2006:

Old Buckingham Road/Route 677, (Chesterfield): This project consisted of new bridge construction and safety improvements to this highly traveled road.
  • Contractor, Corman Construction, Inc., started work on July 18, 2005 and completed on time, Nov. 2, 2006, the original estimated completion date.
  • Project budget: $3,232,431 vs. project final expenditures of $2,876,235; a savings of $356,196 or 11% under budget.
Pollard Creek/ Route 742 (Hanover): This project involved grading, draining and resurfacing the road surface.
  • Contractor, J. L. Kent and Sons, started work on Aug. 21, 2006 and completed Nov. 3, 2006, 27 days in advance of the Nov. 30, 2006 completion date.
  • Project budget: $257,507.80, vs. projected final expenditures of $215,437.93; a savings of $42,070 or 17% under budget.
