RESIDENTS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND PUBLIC HEARING ON NASH ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IN CHESTERFIELD

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY—The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a public hearing next week to receive input on proposed improvements to a one mile section of Nash Road (Rt. 636) between Eastfair Drive and Applewhite Lane near Woodland Pond in Chesterfield County.

The design public hearing will be held Thurs., Jan. 17 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Central Library located at 9501 Lori Road in Chesterfield (Directions). The hearing will be open format with stations where residents can talk one-on-one with VDOT representatives. This flexible format allows participants to arrive whenever their schedule will allow.

VDOT has identified several sight distance problems along this section of Nash Road. The proposed project would improve safety conditions for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians by adjusting the grade and alignment. In addition, the road will be widened to 12 feet in each direction, have eight foot safety shoulders and a six foot ditch for drainage where required. Currently, this one mile section of Nash Road has two 9-foot lanes, one foot shoulders and two foot drainage ditches.

Construction of this project would require VDOT to purchase right of way and easements for utility relocation and construction of slopes. However, no residences, businesses or non-profit organizations will be displaced as a result of this project. Construction is expected to begin in early 2010.

According to 2006 traffic data, approximately 10,000 motorists travel along Nash Road each day. By 2035, more than 31,000 motorists are expected to use Nash Road each day—a 300 percent increase.

Residents are encouraged to offer comments or submit written material concerning the proposed project no later than Jan. 27, 2008 in order to be included in the public hearing transcript. All questions and comments will be considered prior to design approval.
