CARY TAKES NEW POST AT VDOT
SALEM – Robert H. “Rob” Cary, P.E., L.S., of Botetourt County has been promoted to assistant district engineer for preliminary engineering for the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Salem District. Cary previously was district location and design engineer, a position he held since 1995.
In his new post, Cary will oversee all planning and engineering functions that lead to construction for a 12-county area of VDOT. Among the departments he will supervise are planning, location and design, right of way and utilities, and environmental.
“Rob has been an asset to Salem District for several years, taking leadership roles in such high profile projects as the I-73 Location Study and assisting in planning many recent safety improvements to Interstate 81,” said Richard L. Caywood, P.E., Salem District administrator. “He’s a creative thinker and top-notch engineer, and I am proud to add him to the management team at VDOT.”
Other projects Cary has worked on include the I-81 Corridor Feasibility Studies, the Route 460 Bypass in Montgomery County, and Virginia’s Smart Road, a joint project of VDOT, Virginia Tech and the Federal Highway Administration.
Cary began his career at VDOT in 1992 when he joined the Staunton District as a transportation engineer. While in Staunton, he worked on routes 262 and 252 near Staunton and Water Street in Woodstock.
Before coming to VDOT, Cary was a staff engineer and surveyor for William H. Gordon & Associates of Woodbridge, Va. He holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech, where he is working toward a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering.
Cary is a licensed professional engineer for the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as a licensed land surveyor. He is a member of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ Technical Committee on Preconstruction Engineering.
Cary lives in the Cloverdale area of Botetourt County with his wife, Carla, and two children, Robbie and Catherine. He enjoys sailing, coaching youth sports, and managing Destination Imagination teams in the Botetourt County school system.
