PRELIMINARY PLANS READY FOR ROUTE 811
VDOT invites citizens to Dec. 1 public hearing
SALEM – Proposed construction plans for improving two intersections on Route 811 (Thomas Jefferson Road) in Bedford County will be shown to interested citizens Wednesday, Dec. 1, from 4-7 p.m. during a public hearing hosted by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The hearing will be held at the Forest Recreation Center, located at 1088 Rustic Village Road (Route 609) in Forest.
The public hearing will be held in an informal open-house style, and citizens may attend any time at their convenience. Various displays will be available for viewing, including pictures of the current roadway along with renderings of how it could look. Representatives from the Virginia Department of Transportation will be available to explain displays and maps and answer questions.
Construction plans for adding turn lanes and a continuous center turn lane for a half-mile section of Route 811 will be shown at the public hearing. The section to be improved begins 0.2 mile north of Route 661 (Bateman Bridge Road) and ends 0.2 mile south of Route 622.
The existing road has two 11-foot lanes with shoulders of varying width. The proposed road would have three 12-foot lanes, including a center lane for turns, and eight-foot shoulders. A left turn lane would be built at Bateman Bridge Road east, and a right turn lane onto Route 811 would be added on the left side of Bateman Bridge Road in front of Forest Level Baptist Church.
The proposed project would not cause any home, business or non-profit organization to move. Total estimated cost of the project, in today’s dollars, is $3.4 million.
Average daily traffic on Route 811 is about 15,000 vehicles per day; this is expected to increase to 27,000 vpd by 2028. If the project is approved, construction could begin in 2007.
During the public hearing, citizens are encouraged to make comments and suggestions about the proposal in writing or orally to a court reporter. For those unable to attend, written comments can be mailed or delivered by Dec. 11 to Mr. Robert Sutton, VDOT Bedford Residency Office, P.O. Box 446, 2022 E. Lynchburg Salem Turnpike, Bedford, Va. 24523.
For more information about the Route 811 public hearing, call VDOT’s Bedford Residency Office at (540) 586-7910 or TDD 711.
