VDOT COMPLETES PAVEMENT MARKER INSTALLATION AHEAD OF SCHEDULE AND UNDER BUDGET

The Virginia Department of Transportation recently installed raised pavement markers on sections of Route 221 in Carroll County and Route 24 in Bedford County, and the work was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

Snow-plowable, raised pavement markers are placed along the centerline of major roads to help drivers see painted lines at night or during foggy conditions. VDOT’s contractor, Roadmark Corp. from Durham, N.C., was contracted to install the markers on six miles of Route 221 in Carroll County and on nine miles of Route 24 in Bedford County.

The contract allowed the contractor 90 working days to install the markers, but the work was finished in just seven days. The final cost of the project was $60,412, which is about 5.7% under budget.

Bob Beasley, assistant resident engineer in VDOT’s Hillsville Residency Office, attributes the success of completing the project ahead of time and under budget to the good working relationship with the contractor.

“The contractor worked diligently with VDOT to complete the installation in such a short time frame,” explains Beasley. “Those efforts definitely saved VDOT both time and money,” he emphasizes.

VDOT construction inspectors, Paul Faulkner and Al Holland, oversaw the marker installation project.
