SPEED LIMIT INCREASES ON SECTIONS OF ROUTE 58 IN HENRY AND PATRICK COUNTIES
The speed limit on several sections of Route 58 in Henry and Patrick counties will increase from 55 miles per hour (mph) to 60 mph. The speed limit change will affect approximately 18.9 miles of Route 58 in the two counties.
In the next two weeks, the Virginia Department of Transportation will change the signs to designate the new speed limit. If weather permits, the new signs will be in place by May 2.
Several sections of Route 58 in Henry and Patrick counties met the criteria for VDOT to consider a speed limit change as set forth in Senate Bill 1229 that was passed by the General Assembly in 2004. This law allows VDOT to conduct engineering studies on Route 58 to consider raising the speed limit to 60 mph.
VDOT examined the alignment of the road, spacing of intersections, design speed and crash history to determine that 60 mph was an acceptable speed for the following sections of Route 58:
