TRANSPORTATION BOARD APPROVES REVISED SIGN PROGRAM


Includes new tourist-oriented signs for rural areas


FREDERICKSBURG – The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) today approved changes and additions to a highway sign program that directs travelers to Virginia’s motorist-service businesses, tourist destinations and attractions, government facilities, and other sites. The revisions go into effect immediately statewide.

The revised program supports rural area tourism, gives attractions and more businesses a chance to appear on “logo” signs along interstates, and offers motorists more choices during their travels. For example, qualifying wineries, farmers’ markets and bed and breakfasts may now appear on logo signs in the new attractions category.

The new Tourist-Oriented Directional Signs (TODS) will appear on non-controlled access primary highways in areas with less than 5,000 population. They, like the logo signs, will direct travelers to cultural, recreational, and retail tourism areas, special trails and gas, food and lodging facilities.

The logo signs and TODS are part of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT’s) Integrated Directional Signing Program. The program also includes supplemental guide signs and general motorist services signs.

Fees were increased for logo signs, based on traffic volume in the signs’ locations.
Annual fees will be charged for the TODS and for commercial entities’ supplemental guide signs.
