Transportation Enhancement Project Facts - July 15, 2004


  • The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) awarded $14.8 million in federal money for 107 new and ongoing projects funded through the Transportation Enhancement Program for Fiscal Year 2005.


  • Projects include bike trails, sidewalks, train station restorations and other streetscaping and beautification projects that enhance communities. Click here for a complete list of enhancement projects approved by the CTB.


  • No state dollars are used in this program. The Transportation Enhancement Program was started in 1991 to promote unique and innovative projects using federal funds that are available through an application process administered by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The CTB approves the projects.


  • States are required to set aside 10% of their federal Surface Transportation Program funds for enhancement projects.


  • Localities submit applications to VDOT for federal funding to help pay for enhancement projects. The next round of applications is due November 1, 2004. VDOT will hold application workshops from end of July through mid-August. The purpose of the workshops is to review application format, eligibility requirements, and scoring criteria.   • The CTB allots funds to enhancement projects in these categories:


  • - Bicycle and or pedestrian facilities
    - Safety programs for pedestrians and bicyclists
    - Acquisition of scenic easements and scenic or historic sites,
    - Scenic or historic highway programs
    - Landscaping and other scenic beautification
    - Historic preservation
    - Rehabilitation and operation of historic transportation buildings
    - Preservation of abandoned railway for public use such as pedestrian and bicycle trails
    - Control and removal of outdoor advertising
    - Archaeological planning and research
    - Environmental mitigation
    - Establishment of transportation museums
