VDOT CREWS MAKE PROGRESS CLEARING ROADS
Motorists advised of freezing rain

RICHMOND - Interstate and primary road conditions across the state are improving as VDOT crews work continuously to remove snow and slush. Most major roads are clearing with some slush and snow covered areas.

Crews are focusing on clearing the major roads through the day, but work has started to plow at least one pass through subdivisions in some areas.

With freezing rain expected for much of the state through the night and tomorrow morning, motorists should prepare for travel conditions to worsen. VDOT advises that travel be limited as much as possible in areas where freezing rain is in the forecast.

Before heading out the door, know the current road conditions and weather forecast. For statewide highway information, call the Highway Helpline at 1-800-367-ROAD. Additional condition information is available on this Web site.

Frequently asked questions by subdivisions:

How does VDOT decide which roads to clear first?

Roads carrying the most traffic get top priority. Interstate highways and high volume roads are cleared first. Once the most heavily traveled roads and emergency routes are in good shape, snow crews move to less-traveled roads and subdivisions.

How can I get my street on VDOT’s list of roads to be plowed?

There is no such list. If the road is a state road, VDOT is responsible for clearing it.

What should I do in a medical emergency if the roads have not been cleared in my neighborhood?

Call 911 immediately. If emergency crews need help getting to you, they will work with VDOT to get the road cleared.

Who is responsible for clearing my sidewalk?

You are. VDOT does not remove snow from sidewalks, concentrating instead on making the roads safe.

When is the best time to shovel my driveway?

It’s best to shovel your driveway after a plow comes through. If you must shovel before a plow comes through, always shovel to the right, facing the street. That means less snow will be pushed back into your driveway when the plow comes through.
