VDOT APPOINTS STATEWIDE BRAC PROJECT MANAGER
Tom Fahrney to Coordinate All Transportation Projects Associated with Military Base Changes

RICHMOND - Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Commissioner David S. Ekern today named Tom Fahrney statewide project manager and liaison for transportation issues related to the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC).

“Tom brings the transportation planning and organizational skills needed to assist the military in planning, designing and building the transportation infrastructure needed to accommodate the transportation impacts of BRAC throughout the commonwealth,” Ekern said. “Tom will ensure that all BRAC transportation projects will be evaluated on a consistent basis and the public’s interest is served during the BRAC process.”

Fahrney will work with all branches of the military that have congressionally-mandated BRAC actions within the commonwealth. He will provide assistance in planning, design and construction of necessary transportation infrastructure.

Major military facilities in Virginia impacted by the 2005 BRAC action include:
  • Fort Belvoir
  • Fort Lee
  • Marine Base Quantico
  • Fort Monroe
  • Langley Air Force Base
  • Fort A.P. Hill
  • Little Creek Naval Base
  • National Ground Intelligence
Fahrney, a resident of Gainesville, is a 1986 cum laude graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University.

He was a transportation planner and transportation planning branch chief for Prince William County from 1986 to 2001 and VDOT‘s Prince William County transportation manager for from 2001 to 2005.

Since 2005 he has served as VDOT’s project coordinator for Dulles Rail.
