VDOT NAMES FIRST REGIONAL MEGA PROJECT PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Ronaldo “Nick” Nicholson to oversee coordination of major projects in Northern Virginia
CHANTILLY — Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Commissioner David S. Ekern has tapped Ronaldo T. “Nick” Nicholson, P.E., to lead the complex coordination of major construction and public-private projects planned for Northern Virginia.
In his new role, Nicholson will have responsibility for oversight and management of multiple $100+ million construction projects within the Northern Virginia region and will coordinate VDOT’s regional transportation management plan.
“It is truly a pleasure to have found a highly respected professional to manage the coordination of these major transportation improvements in Northern Virginia,” Ekern said. “Nick will use his expertise in coordinating complex construction activities to ensure that motorists stay informed and that these major transportation improvements do not adversely impact traffic while VDOT works to bring relief to Northern Virginia congestion.”
Nicholson will oversee and coordinate more than $7 billion in major construction projects, including:
Nicholson brings a wealth of experience and education to this new role. He most recently served as a project manager for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Improvement Project since June 2001.
Before that he was VDOT’s Northern Virginia structure and bridge engineer from 1995 to 2001 and assistant resident engineer for construction and preliminary engineering from 1993 to 1995.
Prior to joining VDOT, he was a senior design engineer with Fairfax County Department of Public Works, where he was project manager for the Fairfax County Parkway.
He holds a master's in structural engineering from The George Washington University, a bachelor's in civil engineering from the University of Kansas and is currently licensed by the Virginia as a professional engineer.
In 2006, he was named a Modern-Day Technology Leader by the editors of U.S. Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine.
Nicholson began his new duties on June 10. He will continue manage the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project while recruiting his replacement.
