VDOT URGES MOTORISTS TO USE CAUTION WHEN DRIVING TONIGHT AND TOMORROW MORNING
Chance That Bridges, Roads Could Refreeze

RICHMOND — After spending much of the day clearing roads made slick by this morning’s icy weather, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) continues to urge motorists across the state to take extra caution when driving this evening and throughout the morning.

There is a chance of rain and temperatures at or below freezing in many areas of the state tonight. This might cause wet patches on roadways and bridges to refreeze.

Therefore, motorists should:
  • Allow plenty of extra time and expect to encounter icy conditions.

  • Know the conditions before you leave by calling 511 or visiting www.511virginia.org.

  • Always wear your seat belt.

  • Drive slowly.

  • Keep a safe distance, at least five seconds, between you and the car in front of you.

  • Watch for what appear to be wet areas on the roads and bridges. It could be black ice.

  • When driving on ice, don't slam on your brakes. Brake gently. Turn slowly. Sudden changes can cause your car to spin out of control.
VDOT crews will remain on call and are ready to response to treat icy patches with abrasives and chemicals. Motorists can report icy areas to VDOT by calling (800) 367-ROAD.

Motorists can get more safety tips, including an educational video on driving on ice, by visiting http://www.virginiadot.org/news/snowseason.asp.
