VDOT's NORTHERN VIRGINIA DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR RETIRES
Dennis Morrison Retires After 31 Years With VDOT
He is joining Volkert & Associates as senior vice president and office manager for the engineering firm’s Virginia office.

“During his long career with VDOT, Dennis has made so many valuable contributions,” said VDOT Commissioner David S. Ekern. “We will deeply miss his solid leadership, good business sense and management style."
Morrison was named Northern Virginia district administrator in September 2004.
Since then he created the first multi-modal liaison position among the nine transportation districts that provides full-time assistance to transit agencies, groups and localities.
He also oversaw the creation of a full service systems operations team for Northern Virginia to more effectively manage emergency preparedness, incident response times and ensure that intelligent transportation solutions are integrated into congestion management practices.
He chaired the Northern Virginia HOV Advisory Committee and served on the review panel for the proposed Interstate 395/95 HOV/Bus/HOT lanes project.
He was also instrumental in developing VDOT’s pilot program on land use and transportation planning following the 2006 General Assembly’s passage of legislation to more closely tie land use with transportation.
Morrison was responsible for keeping the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Springfield Interchange and Route 28 reconstruction projects on time and on budget. The Springfield Interchange Improvement Project was completed on time and on budget on July 18.
Prior to his position in Northern Virginia, Morrison was district administrator for Staunton, acting Hampton Roads district construction engineer, and the state assistant construction engineer.
From 1985 until 1992, Morrison was the Chesterfield resident engineer.
