TAMS CONTRACT WILL BEGIN AT MIDNIGHT ON PORTIONS OF INTERSTATE 81 AND INTERSTATE 64
A Turnkey Asset Management Services (TAMS) contract will go into effect on portions of Interstate 81 and Interstate 64 in the southern part of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Staunton District on April 17. The $27 million contract was awarded to Infrastructure Corporation of America (ICA) of Brentwood, Tennessee by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) on January 16, 2008.
The contract covers Interstate 81 from mile marker 173.9 at the Rockbridge/Botetourt County line to mile marker 237.5 at the Augusta/Rockingham County line. On Interstate 64 the coverage area is from the West Virginia state line to mile marker 57.2 at the I-64 and I-81 junction in Rockbridge County. Total miles covered by this contract equals 241 center lane miles.
The five-year performance-based contract may be renewed for up to four years. It includes items such as:
· Roadway maintenance (litter pickup, pothole repair)
· Drainage system maintenance
· Mowing
· Guardrail and sign repair
· Snow removal
· Incident response
VDOT will continue to individually contract major bridge and pavement rehabilitation projects. These will be awarded to contractors on a case-by-case basis.
In 2006, Gov. Timothy Kaine signed legislation that requires all interstate maintenance to be outsourced by July 1, 2009.
Other action by the CTB in the VDOT Staunton District during the first quarter of 2008 includes awarding a contract on March 20 valued at $2,650,094.53 to Adams Construction Co. of Roanoke for milling and paving and guardrail upgrades on Interstate 81 southbound in Rockbridge County from three miles south of exit 188 at Route 60 to 1.5 mile south of exit 191 at the I-81/I-64 junction. The work will be done during nighttime hours. Completion is December 1, 2008.
