Majority of lane restrictions in exit 7 work zone to be lifted race weekend
BRISTOL – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will lift the majority of lane restrictions in the Interstate 81 exit 7 work zone by race weekend to improve traffic flow.
By the morning of August 20, the lane closures on the I-81 northbound exit 7 off ramps and on Old Airport Road northbound between Cheddar’s and Route 11 (Lee Highway) will be removed.
Traffic traveling southbound on Old Airport Road from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Bojangles’ will remain unchanged. Motorists should allow extra travel time during construction and plan alternate routes where possible.
The majority of the Interstate 81 exit 7 improvements have been completed; however, work to install a retaining wall and sidewalk beneath the interstate is on-going and will remain in place through late September.
The project, which began spring 2014, includes the following improvements:
- Right turn lanes on Old Airport Road for the northbound and southbound I-81 on-ramps
- Widening Old Airport Road approximately twelve feet under the I-81 bridges, providing space for two lanes southbound and northbound and a left turn lane
- Widening of the bridge over Beaver Creek to the west side creating better traffic flow from Linden Drive to the I-81 southbound on-ramp
- Dual left turn lanes on the northbound I-81 off-ramp.
Orders Construction Company, Inc. St. Albans, W. Va., was awarded the $3.4 million contract to perform the improvements at Exit 7.
