4 p.m. January 22 Travel Advisory: Give snow plows room to work, avoid unnecessary travel

BRISTOL – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews continue efforts to clear snow from highways in southwest Virginia.  VDOT asks you support their efforts by postponing unnecessary travel.

Heavy snow is falling again in some areas, creating treacherous conditions.  The majority of main roads in Scott, Wise, Bland and Smyth counties are extremely slick and hazardous, with most secondary highways experiencing drifting snow.

Roads remain snow-covered in Grayson, Wythe, Lee, Dickenson and Buchanan counties.

Snow and ice patches are reported on Interstates 77 and 81, as well as the majority of main highways in Russell, Tazewell and Washington counties; however, be alert to the possibility of rapidly deteriorating conditions with more snow in the forecast.

Crews work to clear interstates and primary roads first, then major secondary roads with vital emergency and public facilities, then other secondary roads and subdivision streets. Crews focus their efforts on those roads that carry the most traffic.

The 12-county VDOT Bristol District has approximately 900 pieces of equipment, including plows, trucks and spreaders, for snow-removal operations statewide. In addition, VDOT uses contractors to maintain the interstates throughout the commonwealth.

Note:  Primary roads are numbered 1 through 599. Secondary roads are numbered 600 and up.
