October 24- 30: Bristol's Weekly Traffic Alert
BRISTOL – In an effort to keep motorists informed, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) provides weekly information about highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia. When traveling through highway work zones, use caution and be alert to changes in traffic patterns and slow-moving or stopped traffic.

Underlined entries with asterisks (***) indicate the listing is new or the status of the project has changed since last week’s traffic alert.
***Interstate 81 – Exit 14: Work is underway to reconstruct Interstate 81 exit 14 to better accommodate traffic volumes and to replace the north and southbound interstate 81 bridges at exit 14. During the week of October 24, be alert to the possibility of a northbound lane closure on I-81 during overnight hours Monday through Wednesday. Haul truck traffic entering and exiting the median along Interstate 81 north and southbound at exit 14 may also occur this week. Also be alert to flaggers working along Old Jonesboro Road and Dennison Drive during daytime hours, and be alert to an increase in heavy equipment crossing in this area. There may also be changes to the intersection of Dennison Road and Jonesboro Road this week, weather permitting. (Completion: fall 2018)
I-81 bridges over Halls Bottom Road: Replacement of the Interstate 81 bridges over Halls Bottom Road near exit 10 in Washington County is underway. Be alert to grading and drainage work in the median, and to haul truck traffic entering and exiting the median. I-81 travel lanes may be narrowed through the work zone. Due to safety concerns, Route 808 (Halls Bottom Road) is closed underneath the interstate bridges. Only emergency-response vehicles will have access; all other vehicle traffic will be required to detour. (Completion: Fall 2018)
***Interstate 77 – bridge repairs: Due to replacement of a bridge deck located on I-77 northbound near exit 66 and East River Mountain Tunnel, motorists can expect lane closures northbound Wednesday or Thursday nights due to milling work. The week of October 30, there will be lane closures Sunday evening through Friday morning due to bridge work, as well as the closure of the northbound on-ramp at exit 66. (Completion: Late November 2016)
Interstate 81 bridges at mile marker 17 in Washington County: Motorists should be alert for periodic shoulder and lane closures in the northbound and southbound lanes during bridge repairs. Also be alert to periodic shoulder and lane closures under the bridges. (Completion March, 2017)
Interstate 81 bridges at mile marker 47 in Marion: Motorists should be alert to periodic shoulder closures and lane closures on Interstate 81 at the bridges at mile marker 47 in the Marion area of Smyth County due to bridge repairs. (Completion: November 2016)
Interstate 81 – Exit 80: Bridge work at I-81 exit 80 in Wythe County will cause daytime and nighttime periodic lane closures. Also be alert to lane closures along Route 52, which is the route located off exit 80 that crosses over I-81. (Completion: October 2016)
Interstate 77 bridges at mile marker 51 (Bland County): While bridge repairs are underway, motorists should be alert to periodic shoulder and lane closures north and southbound on I-77 at the bridges over Walker Creek at mile marker 51 in Bland County. (Completion: December 2016)
***Interstate 77 – maintenance activities: Be alert to nighttime lane closures this week on Interstate 77 southbound near exit 47 and mile marker 45 in Wythe County due to bridge repairs.
***Interstate 81 – maintenance activities: Be alert to the following maintenance activities this week on Interstate 81:
- Brush removal between Bristol and Chilhowie
- Drainage work between Chilhowie and Rural Retreat
- Nighttime bridge repairs north and southbound near mile marker 58 in Wythe County.
PRIMARY HIGHWAYS AND HIGH TRAFFIC SECONDARY ROADS:
Water line projects: Due to water line installation work, motorists may experience delays on the following routes that connect to Route 63 (Big Ridge Road): Route 753 (Centennial Heights Road), Route 818 (Patsy Lane), Route 756 (Travis Stanley Road), Route 795 (Ira Owens Lane) and Route 607 (Tarpon Lane). (Completion: Spring 2017)
***Route 663 (Powder Mill Road) – bridge repairs: The Route 663 (Powder Mill Road) bridge over Elk Creek will be closed for repairs Tuesday, November 1 at 9a.m. and will remain closed until Wednesday, November 9 at 3p.m. The bridge is located at the intersection of Route 662 and 2.1 miles to Route 665.
***Route 665 – drainage work: Route 665 in Russell County will be closed Monday (October 24) for drainage work. The work will be south of the intersection of Route 628 and will take place from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Be alert to message boards regarding the project. (Completion: October 24)
Route 606 – bridge replacement: Due to replacement of the Route 606 bridge over Copper Creek in Russell County, the bridge will be closed until December 23. Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes. (Completion: December 23)
Route 72 – utility project: Anticipate lane closures during daylight hours on Route 72 between Midway and Fort Blackmore in Scott County due to new power line construction. (Completion: late 2016)
Water line installation: Motorists should be alert to the possibility of delays due to water line installation work at the following locations:
- Routes 58 (Bristol Highway) and 615 (Federal Road), beginning at the intersection of Routes 58 and 803 (Stage Lane) and extending eastward to the intersection of Routes 58 and 617 (Shelleys Road). (Completion: Spring 2017)
- Route 619 (Big Stoney Creek Road) in the Fort Blackmore area, between Route 72 (Veterans Memorial Highway) and Route 653 (Hunters Valley East Road) (Completion: Winter 2016)
***Route 651 (Carriage Road) – bridge replacement: Due to replacement of the Route 651 (Carriage Road) bridge in Smyth County, the bridge will be closed from 8 a.m. Monday (October 17) until 6 p.m. November 7. The bridge is located .06 mile from Route 605 and .14 mile from Route 645. (Completion: November 7)
Route 102 bridge replacement: A project to reconstruct the Route 102 bridge over Laurel Fork in the Pocahontas area of Tazewell County is underway. Motorists should use caution in this area and be alert to signals controlling one-way traffic across the bridge. (Completion: May 2017)
Route 643 (Dick Creek Road): Due to roadway improvements on a section of Route 643 (Dick Creek Road) in Tazewell County, motorists should anticipate the possibility of delays during daylight hours and be alert to flaggers. (Completion: December 2016)
***Route 11 and Falcon Place Drive: Weather permitting, be alert to milling, paving a striping from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. nightly Sunday through Wednesday (October 23 – 26) at the intersection of Route 11 and Falcon Place Drive in Abingdon. (Completion: October 2016)
Route 611 (Providence Road): Due to a project to realign a portion of Route 611 (Providence Road) in Washington County near Virginia Highlands Airport, motorists should be alert to periodic delays and the possibility of flaggers directing traffic. (Completion: early November 2016)
Route 725 roadway improvement project: Work is underway to improve a section of Route 725 in the Taylor’s Valley community of Washington County. Motorists should be alert to the possibility of delays of up to 15 minutes during daylight hours. (Completion: late November 2016)
Route 613 – road widening: Due to work to widen and install guardrail along Route 613 in the East Stone Gap community of Wise County, motorists should be alert to flaggers periodically directing traffic through the work zone. (Completion: Summer 2017)
Route 757 (Wise-Norton Road): Work to widen a one-mile section of Route 757 (Wise-Norton Road) is underway. New traffic pattern restricts traffic to one-way on Route 757 from Business Route 23 at Wise toward Route 23. There is two-way traffic between Route 23 and the Wal-mart shopping area; however, traffic is accessing Route 757 north of Wal-mart using Route 23 north to Business Route 23 in Wise. Motorists should be alert to highway workers, message boards and detour signs, and heavy equipment in the area. (Completion: October 2017)
Business Route 23 bridge in Pound: Traffic signals are controlling one 11-foot-wide lane across the Business Route 23 bridge in Pound due to replacement of the bridge. Signals are also controlling traffic off Route 633 (Bold Camp Road). Motorists should use caution in this area and be alert to the possibility of delays. (Completion: spring 2018)
Water and sewer line projects: Be alert to lane closures during daylight hours due to:
- Sewer line installation in the Andover, Osaka and Roda areas north of Appalachia in Wise County. Route 78 between Route 686 near Central Supply and Route 685 will be impacted by a portion of this work. (Completion: fall 2017)
Route 619 (Saint Peters Road): Possible lane closures and delays on Route 619 (Saint Peters Road) due to reconstruction and overlay of a 2.7 mile section, from near the intersection with Route 21 in Speedwell to the intersection with Route 707. (Completion: November 2016)
I-81 overhead sign upgrade in Bristol: The project to upgrade various overhead signs along I-81 between exit 7 and the Virginia/Tennessee state line has been completed.
Route 614 (Yuma Road): Reconstruction of Route 614 (Yuma Road) in Scott County has been completed.
Palmer Avenue – Saltville: Improvements to a portion of Palmer Avenue in the Town of Saltville have been completed.
Route 121 at Max Meadows – railroad crossing repairs: Repairs by Norfolk Southern Railroad to the Route 121 (Max Meadows Road) crossing between Ayers Street and Ramsey Mountain Road in Wythe County have been completed.
