October 3 - 9: Bristol's Weekly Traffic Alert
BRISTOL – In an effort to keep motorists informed, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) provides weekly information about highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia. When traveling through highway work zones, use caution and be alert to changes in traffic patterns and slow-moving or stopped traffic.

Underlined entries with asterisks (***) indicate the listing is new or the status of the project has changed since last week’s traffic alert.
***Interstate 81 – Exit 14: Work is underway to reconstruct Interstate 81 exit 14 to better accommodate traffic volumes and to replace the north and southbound interstate 81 bridges at exit 14. During the week of October 3, be alert to a nighttime lane closure Thursday night on I-81 northbound due to barrier wall work and a nighttime lane closure Tuesday night on Jonesboro Road due to placement of pavement markings. Anticipate flaggers working along Old Jonesboro Road and Dennison Drive during daytime hours, and be alert to an increase in heavy equipment crossing in this area. (Completion: fall 2018)
***I-81 bridges over Halls Bottom Road: Replacement of the Interstate 81 bridges over Halls Bottom Road near exit 10 in Washington County is underway. Be alert to grading and drainage work in the median next week. I-81 travel lanes may be narrowed through the work zone. Due to safety concerns, Route 808 (Halls Bottom Road) will be closed underneath the interstate bridges beginning Monday (October 3). Only emergency-response vehicles will have access; all other vehicle traffic will be required to detour. (Completion: Fall 2018)
I-81 overhead sign upgrade in Bristol: Motorists can expect overnight lane closures and width restrictions on the exit and on ramps on I-81 between exit 7 and the Virginia/Tennessee state line due to work to upgrade various overhead signs in the area. Work will take place nightly from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Monday through Friday.
Interstate 81 bridges at mile marker 17 in Washington County: Motorists should be alert for periodic shoulder and lane closures in the northbound and southbound lanes during bridge repairs. Also be alert to periodic shoulder and lane closures under the bridges. (Completion March, 2017)
Interstate 81 bridges at mile marker 47 in Marion: Motorists should be alert to periodic shoulder closures and lane closures on Interstate 81 at the bridges at mile marker 47 in the Marion area of Smyth County due to bridge repairs. (Completion: November 2016)
Interstate 81 – Exit 80: Bridge work at I-81 exit 80 in Wythe County will cause daytime and nighttime periodic lane closures. Also be alert to lane closures along Route 52, which is the route located off exit 80 that crosses over I-81. (Completion: October 2016)
Interstate 77 bridges at mile marker 51 (Bland County): While bridge repairs are underway, motorists should be alert to periodic shoulder and lane closures north and southbound on I-77 at the bridges over Walker Creek at mile marker 51 in Bland County. (Completion: December 2016)
***Interstate 77 – maintenance activities: No maintenance activities will require lane closures this week; however, motorists should be alert to workers along the shoulder performing work such as brush removal and fence repairs.
***Interstate 81 – maintenance activities: Be alert to the following maintenance activities this week on Interstate 81:
- Southbound lane closure between mile markers 58 and 59 in Wythe County during daylight hours Monday due to brush and tree removal.
- Nighttime lane closures northbound near exit 7 and mile marker 16 in Washington County and north and southbound lane closures near mile marker 58 in Wythe County due to bridge repairs.
PRIMARY HIGHWAYS AND HIGH TRAFFIC SECONDARY ROADS:
Route 661 – bridge replacement: Motorists should use caution and expect periodic delays for flagging operations at Long Hollow Branch in the Flatwoods Community. A bridge is being replaced with a box culvert and the roadway will be realigned. (Completion: October 2016)
***Route 606 – bridge replacement: Due to replacement of the Route 606 bridge over Copper Creek in Russell County, the bridge will be closed in mid-October and will remain closed until December 23. Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes. (Completion: December 23)
***Route 628 – drainage work: Route 628 in Russell County at the intersection of Route 665 will be closed Tuesday (October 4) from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. for drainage work. Motorists should plan alternate routes.
Route 72 – utility project: Anticipate lane closures during daylight hours on Route 72 between Midway and Fort Blackmore in Scott County due to new power line construction. (Completion: late 2016)
Water line installation: Motorists should be alert to the possibility of delays due to water line installation work at the following locations:
- Routes 58 (Bristol Highway) and 615 (Federal Road), beginning at the intersection of Routes 58 and 803 (Stage Lane) and extending eastward to the intersection of Routes 58 and 617 (Shelleys Road). (Completion: Spring 2017)
- Route 619 (Big Stoney Creek Road) in the Fort Blackmore area, between Route 72 (Veterans Memorial Highway) and Route 653 (Hunters Valley East Road) (Completion: Winter 2016)
Route 614 (Yuma Road): Culvert installation within the Route 614 (Yuma Road) work zone has been completed and the traffic pattern at the intersection of Routes 614 and 713 (Frisco Yard Road) is back to normal. Motorists should be alert to workers and heavy equipment along the roadway as roadway improvements continue. (Completion: November 2016)
Palmer Avenue – Saltville: Due to a project to improve a portion of Palmer Avenue in the Town of Saltville, a section of the route is closed between Ernest Mitchell Memorial Lane and Lake Drive. Motorists should follow detour signs while work is underway. (Completion: November 2015)
Route 102 bridge replacement: A project to reconstruct the Route 102 bridge over Laurel Fork in the Pocahontas area of Tazewell County is underway. Motorists should use caution in this area and be alert to signals controlling one-way traffic across the bridge. (Completion: May 2017)
Route 643 (Dick Creek Road): Due to roadway improvements on a section of Route 643 (Dick Creek Road) in Tazewell County, motorists should anticipate the possibility of delays during daylight hours and be alert to flaggers. (Completion: December 2016)
***Route 839 (Alder Street) – drainage work: Due to the installation of drainage pipes along Route 839 (Alder Street) near Emory and Henry College Monday (October 3), motorists should anticipate periodic traffic stops and the possibility of delays.
Route 11 and Falcon Place Drive: Be alert to flaggers directing traffic during daylight hours daily as well as periodic nighttime delays due to construction at the intersection of Route 11 and Falcon Place Drive in Abingdon. (Completion: October 2016)
***Route 611 (Providence Road): Due to a project to realign a portion of Route 611 (Providence Road) in Washington County near Virginia Highlands Airport, motorists should be alert to periodic delays and the possibility of flaggers directing traffic. (Completion: early November 2016)
Route 725 roadway improvement project: Work is underway to improve a section of Route 725 in the Taylor’s Valley community of Washington County. Motorists should be alert to the possibility of delays of up to 15 minutes during daylight hours. (Completion: late November 2016)
Route 757 (Wise-Norton Road): Work to widen a one-mile section of Route 757 (Wise-Norton Road) is underway. New traffic pattern restricts traffic to one-way on Route 757 from Business Route 23 at Wise toward Route 23. There is two-way traffic between Route 23 and the Wal-mart shopping area; however, traffic is accessing Route 757 north of Wal-mart using Route 23 north to Business Route 23 in Wise. Motorists should be alert to highway workers, message boards and detour signs, and heavy equipment in the area. (Completion: October 2017)
***Business Route 23 bridge in Pound: In an effort to safely set new beams for the Business Route 23 bridge in Pound, the bridge will be closed two days next week. Weather permitting, the Business Route 23 bridge in Pound will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until 5p.m. Wednesday and Thursday (October 5 and 6). Due to the size of the beams and their proximity to overhead power lines, it was determined the best way to safely do the work was to temporarily close the bridge.
Motorists should detour around the closure using Route 23 to access Business Route 23 north and south of Pound. (Completion: spring 2018)
***Water and sewer line projects: Be alert to lane closures during daylight hours due to:
- Sewer line installation in the Andover, Osaka and Roda areas north of Appalachia in Wise County. Route 78 between Route 686 near Central Supply and Route 685 will be impacted by a portion of this work. (Completion: fall 2017)
***Route 121 at Max Meadows – railroad crossing repairs: Due to repairs by Norfolk Southern Railroad, the Route 121 (Max Meadows Road) crossing between Ayers Street and Ramsey Mountain Road will be closed October 17 from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Motorists should plan alternate routes while work is underway.
Route 619 (Saint Peters Road): Possible lane closures and delays on Route 619 (Saint Peters Road) due to reconstruction and overlay of a 2.7 mile section, from near the intersection with Route 21 in Speedwell to the intersection with Route 707. (Completion: November 2016)
Water and sewer line projects: Water line installation at various secondary routes in the Upper Exeter community in Wise County has been completed.
