Speed limit change on section of Route 58 in Washington County

BRISTOL – Next month, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will increase the speed limit on a section of Route 58 between Abingdon and Damascus in Washington County from 55 mph to 60 mph.

VDOT will install the new speed limit signs in September.  The changes will affect about 3.5 miles of Route 58.

The section of Route 58 met the criteria for VDOT to consider a speed limit change as set forth in Senate Bill 1229 that was passed by the General Assembly in 2005.
This law allows VDOT to conduct engineering studies on multi-lane divided highways on certain corridors including Route 58 and consider raising the speed limit up to 60 mph.

VDOT examined the alignment of the road, spacing of intersections, design speed and crash history to determine that 60 mph was an acceptable speed for the following section of Route 58:

New Limit

Route 787 (Celebrity Lane)

Route 708 (Rhea Valley Road)

3.61 miles

60 mph

VDOT coordinated with the Virginia State Police and local officials before the speed limit changes were finalized.
