Process to repair multiple slides on Route 624 (Garden Creek Road) in Buchanan County begins today
To ensure safety during repairs, road will be closed approximately 4 - 6 weeks
BRISTOL – Crews with GeoStabilization International, Grand Junction, Colo., are mobilizing today on Route 624 (Garden Creek Road) in Buchanan County to repair multiple slides along the route. One of the slides occurred April 23 and another occurring over the weekend during a second bout of heavy rains in the region.
Because of the instability of the slide areas and the extensive nature of the repairs, the road will need to be closed for approximately 4 – 6 weeks. Crews will begin by scaling of the slope to remove unstable debris that remains on the slope face.
“Because the scaling of the slope involves removal of loose materials which will slide onto the roadway below so it can be hauled away, the road must be closed to ensure safety,” said John Watson, Lebanon Residency Administrator.
Following scaling and debris removal, the slope conditions will be reviewed to determine if further measures are needed to ensure stability of the slope, such as mesh over the slope or construction of a debris barrier. Once any additional safety measures are decided on by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the contractor will immediately begin installation.
“We know this is an inconvenience to residents in the area and we greatly appreciate their patience. VDOT must ensure the slope is repaired well and in a safe manner,” Watson said.
Route 624 alternate routes are:
- From Drill: take Route 624, Route 662 Robinson Fork, Route 620 East to 83 at Vansant.
- From Vansant: Route 83 West, Route 620 Deskins Road, Route 662 Robinson Fork onto Route 624. (END)
