Motorists urged to drive with caution, check 511 for latest weather, road conditions

CULPEPER — A mix of snow, sleet and rain has created slick road conditions in the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Culpeper District.

As of 5 p.m., roads in Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier and Rappahannock counties are in minor condition with icy patches. Secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) in Greene and Madison counties are also in minor condition. Roads in Fluvanna, Louisa and Orange counties are clear at this time.

VDOT crews have been working throughout the storm to plow and treat roads with salt, sand and other abrasives. Crews in areas of highest elevation will work overnight. All other crews will monitor weather conditions and respond as needed.

If driving is necessary tonight or early Thursday morning, motorists should be extremely cautious as falling temperatures may refreeze moisture and create slick road conditions. Drivers should pay particular attention to bridges, overpasses, ramps and shaded spots. Allow extra time for travel, reduce speed and increase following distance to provide additional reaction time.

Motorists should check VDOT’s 511 travel website,, before leaving on a trip. The website is updated in real time with weather and road conditions for all highways in Virginia. Once on the road VDOT’s “511” mobile app provides real-time traffic and weather information for both iPhone and Android platforms. Travelers can also call 511 from any telephone in Virginia for real-time information on traffic and road conditions.
