Dundee Road will close to through traffic at the South River from Oct. 9 to Dec. 7

CULPEPER — On Oct. 9 the Virginia Department of Transportation will close the bridge over the South River on Route 619 (Dundee Road) in Greene County. During the nine-week closure the entire bridge will be replaced.

The current steel beam, timber deck bridge is badly deteriorated and has been limited to vehicles weighing no more than three tons for the past year. That effectively closed the bridge to all traffic except passenger vehicles.

During the closure VDOT crews will first remove the existing three-span, steel and timber deck superstructure. Then the two piers will be removed from the stream. Those piers have accumulated debris and contributed to problems with river erosion near the bridge. The new bridge will span the entire river without supporting piers.

After removing the existing structure and the supporting piers the crews will rebuild the bridge abutments to fit the new superstructure. The new bridge will be wider than the existing structure, made of precast concrete slabs and carry all legal loads. The work is expected to be complete and the road reopened to traffic on Dec. 7.

While Route 619 is closed at South River access will be maintained to all properties on both sides of the river. Motorists should follow the posted detour route using Route 609 (Fredericksburg Road) to Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) to Route 33 Business (Spotswood Trail), then to a right on Route 230 (Madison Road) to Route 619 (Dundee Road).
