Project will increase capacity of left-turn lanes at Rt. 33 intersection in Ruckersville

CULPEPER — The two left-turn lanes on Route 29 (Seminole Trail) at the Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) intersection will be extended to accommodate more vehicles. A contractor for the Virginia Department of Transportation will begin work on the project Monday, Aug. 13.

The turn lanes will be extended south another 200 feet, followed by a 200-foot taper into the left travel lane. The improvement will reduce congestion and improve safety by minimizing the left-turn backup into the through lanes on Route 29. The current turn lanes are not long enough to accommodate all the vehicles waiting to turn left at peak traffic volumes.

The $200,000 project is being done by C.W. Chittum Inc., of Bumpass. The work is expected to take six weeks and be completed by Sept. 21. Work hours will be restricted to between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. to avoid affecting the afternoon northbound traffic through Ruckersville.

The construction will require significant earthwork in the median before the turn lanes can be lengthened. Motorists using Route 29 south of the Route 33 intersection should be alert to equipment working in the project area as well as trucks entering and exiting the work area. As the project progresses there may be temporary lane closures during construction and drivers should follow the signs as they approach the work zone and be aware that traffic patterns may change during construction.

Real-time road conditions and weather forecasts are available on VDOT’s traffic and travel Web site, The site also has live traffic camera images for many major highways, including Interstate 64, I-66 and Routes 29 and 250 in Central Virginia. Motorists can call 511 for road and traffic conditions on all major highways in the state.
