Motorists should avoid travel during the storm

CULPEPER — Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation are completing preparations in advance of the eight to 15 inches of snow forecast for Central Virginia.

Brining operations have been performed on Interstate 64 and I-66, primary highways and high-volume secondary roads in the Culpeper District. Equipment has been readied, and VDOT is working in close coordination with utility companies and contractors for snow removal and tree cutting. Wrecker services have also been put on standby for assistance with stranded vehicles.

Crews will come on duty this evening as the storm begins to plow snow and treat roads with salt and sand. They will operate on 12-hour shifts throughout the storm and afterward until all roads are cleared. Approximately 700 pieces of equipment will be used by Culpeper District during this storm.

VDOT asks motorists to help crews do their job by staying off the roads during the storm. Get to your destination in advance of the snow and be prepared to shelter in place. As the weather improves, use the 511 system to verify road conditions before travel.

Motorists should check VDOT’s 511 travel website,, before leaving on a trip. The website is updated in real time with weather and road conditions for all highways in Virginia. Once on the road VDOT’s 511 mobile app provides real-time traffic and weather information for both iPhone and Android platforms. Travelers can also call 511 from any telephone in Virginia for real-time information on traffic and road conditions.
