VDOT TO MOBILIZE FOR LATE WINTER STORM
Motorists encouraged to check road conditions, drive with caution Friday morning
CULPEPER — Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation will report to work at 8 p.m. to respond to the winter precipitation that is forecasted to affect Central Virginia tonight and into Friday morning. While the amount and type of precipitation may vary across the region, all motorists are advised to check local weather and road conditions before traveling.
Working around the clock in 12-hour shifts, VDOT operators will plow accumulated snow and treat roads with abrasives for traction and to aid melting.
Motorists are urged to consider altering their Friday morning commute to avoid driving in slick road conditions. If travel is necessary, drivers should observe the following precautions:
- Slow down and allow for extra time to reach your destination.
- Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges.
- Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles and trucks that are plowing the road.
- Do not pass a snowplow or spreader unless it is absolutely necessary.
Motorists should tune in to local media for weather information and visit 511Virginia.org or call 511 for real-time road conditions. Details about VDOT’s winter-weather preparation and response can be found at www.virginiadot.org/travel/snow.asp.
