New turn lanes, signal change proposed at intersection with Thornton Rolling Road, Jim Morris Road

FREDERICKSBURG – The public is invited to attend a design public hearing next week to learn more about proposed improvements to the intersection of Route 17 (Mills Drive) and Route 609 (Thornton Rolling Road/Jim Morris Road) in Spotsylvania County.

The design public hearing will be held:

Thursday, May 5

5-7 p.m.

Lee Hill Elementary School

3600 Lee Hill School Drive

Fredericksburg, VA 22408

Stop by between 5-7 p.m. to review displays, plans, and discuss questions with Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) staff. No formal presentation will be given at the public hearing.

Comments will be accepted at the public hearing. Comments can also be submitted by mailing them to Mr. Khalil Minhas, VDOT Project Manager, 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405. Comments may also be emailed to fredericksburginfo@VDOT.Virginia.Gov.

Comments must be received by May 16, 2016.

Proposed changes at the intersection include modifying the existing traffic signal from a flashing signal to full color operation.

Construction of a left, through and right turn lane on Route 17 eastbound and westbound are proposed at the intersection.

On Thornton Rolling Road, a left turn lane would be built with a shared through/right turn lane at the intersection approach.

On Jim Morris Road, a right turn lane would be built with a shared through/left turn lane at the intersection approach.
