FINAL PAVING BEGINS NEXT WEEK AT ROUTE 1 AND HARRISON ROAD IN SPOTSYLVANIA
Expect overnight lane closures and delays in September as construction nears completion

FREDERICKSBURG – Motorists should anticipate overnight lane closures and delays at the Route 1 and Harrison Road intersection in Spotsylvania County for most of September, as construction to improve and widen the intersection nears completion.

Drivers will encounter overnight lane closures on Route 1 and Harrison Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Wednesday, Sept. 6.  Nighttime paving work is expected to be underway for approximately four weeks. Starting the evening of Sunday, Sept. 10, work will occur on Sunday through Thursday evenings.

Beginning next week, crews will start by milling the existing pavement. Motorists may encounter a slightly rougher travel surface on a temporary basis until new asphalt is applied.

Extra signage will be placed in the work zone to warn drivers of rough pavement and bumps ahead.

Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control at the intersection.

Message boards will be placed next week to warn drivers about the upcoming work zone and possible delays at the intersection.

Once paving work is complete, all new travel and turn lanes will be open.  Traffic will flow in its final configuration with the new traffic signal equipment and timings throughout the intersection.

Project Background

Construction began on this $22 million project in May 2016.

The project seeks to reduce congestion and driver delay surrounding the intersection by building additional turn lanes and through lanes and extending existing turn lanes.

New traffic signal equipment, sidewalks and lighting are being added at the intersection to include pedestrian crossing features.

An estimated 24,600 vehicles a day travel through the intersection, according to a 2015 VDOT traffic count.

Additional project information is available online at the project page on www.VirginiaDOT.org.
