New traffic pattern to reduce delays is gradually opening as construction advances

FREDERICKSBURG – New turn lanes and travel lanes are open at the intersection of Route 1 and Harrison Road in Spotsylvania County.

Drivers should be alert for a new traffic pattern. New traffic signal equipment is controlling traffic from mast arms spanning the intersection.

With more vehicles progressing through the intersection on each signal cycle, drivers should experience a faster trip with fewer delays. Approximately 24,600 vehicles pass through the intersection of Route 1 and Harrison Road each day.

The $22 million project slightly widened the intersection to create space for new through lanes and dual turn lanes on several approaches. Several existing turn lanes were lengthened. Frontage roads connecting at the intersection were closed to improve safety, and side street traffic was redirected to enter at new locations.

While new lanes are opening, construction is not complete on the project.

Next week, an additional Route 1 northbound left turn lane to Harrison Road westbound is anticipated to open. Single lane closures will be needed periodically on Route 1 in October to complete median work. Cleanup work will be performed throughout the intersection.

Pedestrian facilities are also open for use at the intersection. Sidewalks were added within the intersection limits. A 10-foot shared use path was built on the north side of Harrison Road between Route 1 and the new Wallace Lane connector road. Pedestrian crossing equipment was added on each corner of the intersection. New lighting installed at the intersection provides better visibility for all travelers.

Construction began in May 2016 and is scheduled to be completed by May 2018. An additional release will be sent when all construction activities at the intersection are complete.

The project contractor is Henderson Construction Company, Inc., of Stafford.
