NEW TRAFFIC SIGNAL TO BE ACTIVATED ON ROUTE 3 IN FREDERICKSBURG
Starting the evening of December 6, all I-95 southbound traffic exiting to Route 3 westbound at Exit 130 will use new ramp with triple right turn lanes, controlled by a new traffic signal

FREDERICKSBURG – As part of the Interstate 95 Safety Improvements Project at Exit 130 in Fredericksburg, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will activate a new traffic signal on Route 3 westbound at the I-95 southbound exit ramp.

The new signal will be activated on Monday, Dec. 4, after the morning peak travel period. The Route 3 westbound signal heads will flash yellow for the first 48 hours of operation to allow motorists to adjust to their presence. All signal heads will then be placed in full operation after the evening peak travel period on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Traffic exiting I-95 southbound will be shifted to a new ramp, which will intersect with Route 3 westbound at a traffic signal. All I-95 southbound traffic exiting to Route 3 westbound will come to the traffic signal, stop, and turn right as controlled by the signal.

To provide as many lanes as possible to ease Route 3 congestion, two additional through travel lanes have been added to Route 3 westbound approaching the new traffic signal. These lanes will open to traffic the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Route 3 westbound traffic seeking to turn right at Carl D. Silver Parkway and access Central Park can use these new lanes as they approach the right turn lanes at Carl D. Silver Parkway.

An online map of the new ramp and traffic pattern at Exit 130 has been posted online at www.VirginiaDOT.org at the project page

Message boards and signs will be posted starting Wednesday, Nov. 29, to alert motorists to the new signal and ramp traffic pattern.

In spring 2018, a new free-flow lane leading directly to Carl D. Silver Parkway will open at the I-95 southbound exit ramp. This lane will be separated from the rest of the ramp with a barrier.

This $21 million project, funded with federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funds, seeks to enhance safety by reducing vehicle merging and weaving that can lead to crashes, injuries and congestion on Route 3 and I-95. These improvements are designed to lower the crash risk by eliminating conflict points where vehicles currently merge.

Construction will be completed by January 2019.

Additional project information is available online at www.VirginiaDOT.org on the project page.
