NEW WESTBOUND HARRISON ROAD TRAFFIC PATTERN STARTING WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26
Westbound Harrison Road traffic, west of Route 1, will move onto new pavement

FREDERICKSBURG – Drivers on Route 620 (Harrison Road) westbound in Spotsylvania County should be alert for a new traffic pattern starting Wednesday, April 26.

Westbound Harrison Road traffic, west of Route 1, will be shifted slightly left onto new pavement shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Drivers can expect brief traffic stops over a 30-minute period as westbound traffic is transitioned onto new pavement.

Eastbound Harrison Road traffic will not be affected.

Message boards will be posted in the work zone on Monday, April 24, to notify drivers of the upcoming traffic shift.

If weather conditions cancel the traffic shift on Wednesday, it will be re-scheduled to occur at approximately 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 27.

Traffic is shifting to provide space for crews to continue building a new median dividing eastbound and westbound Harrison Road traffic, and to finish construction along the road’s northern half.

Route 1 Southbound

Drivers on Route 1 southbound at Harrison Road will also be affected by a temporary pattern change on Wednesday from 2 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The right turn lane and right through lane of Route 1 southbound at Harrison Road will share a lane for approximately 12 hours as construction crews prepare to build a new continuous right turn lane to Harrison Road westbound.

The dedicated right turn lane to Harrison Road westbound is expected to be restored in time for evening rush hour.

Route 1 and Harrison Road Intersection Improvement Project

A $22 million intersection improvement project is under construction at Route 1 and Harrison Road in Spotsylvania.

The project seeks to reduce congestion and driver delay surrounding the intersection by building additional turn lanes and through lanes and extending existing turn lanes.

Sidewalks and new lighting will be added at the intersection. The project will also upgrade traffic signal equipment to include pedestrian crossing features.

Construction began in May 2016 and will be completed by May 2018.

An estimated 24,600 vehicles a day travel through the intersection, according to a 2015 VDOT traffic count.

Additional project information is available online at the project page on http://www.VirginiaDOT.org.
