TURN LANE PROJECT TO START AT ROUTE 17 AND ROUTE 616 (TOWN BRIDGE ROAD) IN MIDDLESEX COUNTY
Town Bridge Rd. will be closed at Route 17 on Wednesday, July 12, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

FREDERICKSBURG – Construction work begins next week on a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) project to extend a right turn lane from Route 17 northbound to Town Bridge Road in Middlesex County.

VDOT crews will replace a drainage pipe underneath Town Bridge Road as part of the project. To replace the pipe, Town Bridge Road will be closed to traffic at the Route 17 intersection on Wednesday, July 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Travelers in passenger vehicles are encouraged to use Route 615 (Zion Branch Road) as a detour route. Truck traffic is advised to use Route 227 (Urbanna Road) to Route 17.

Project Background

Extending the right turn lane will add capacity for vehicles turning right onto Town Bridge Road, which leads to the Town of Urbanna. The extended turn lane also enhances safety by providing more space for vehicles to decelerate before the turn in a dedicated lane, which avoids slowing traffic in the Route 17 northbound through lanes.

The $250,000 project is being built by VDOT crews. Weather permitting, construction will be completed by July 31, 2017.

After July 12, no additional full road closures are anticipated for the project. Motorists should remain alert for daytime single lane closures at the intersection during July. Flagging crews will control one-way, alternating traffic.
