UPDATE: ROUTE 622 (FAIRVIEW ROAD) REMAINS CLOSED IN SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY FOR BRIDGE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
Heavy rain delayed work; Fairview Rd. will open to through traffic by May 12

FREDERICKSBURG –  Route 622 (Fairview Road) in Spotsylvania County remains closed to through traffic as crews continue to  work to improve the condition of the bridge over Northeast Creek.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) closed Fairview Road just west of Route 601 (Wallers Road) to through traffic on March 20 for a bridge improvement project. Heavy rain has delayed work and the detour will remain in place for another week.

The bridge is located between Wallers Road and Lewistown Road in the Partlow area.

Construction is underway to replace the existing bridge’s steel beams, deck with new timber, steel and guardrail. Crews are also making repairs to the vertical walls and foundation.

VDOT anticipates to re-open the road to traffic by May 12, weather permitting.

Signs are posted along the recommended detour, which is approximately 17 miles:

  • Route 738 (Partlow Road)
  • Route 614 (Duerson Lane)
  • Route 614 (Dickerson Road)
  • Route 601 (Lewiston Road)

A map of the detour route can be found online at www.virginiadot.orghttp://www.virginiadot.org/projects/resources/Fredericksburg/Route_622_Detour_Map.pdf

The existing bridge, constructed in 1964, is structurally deficient. It has a posted weight restriction of 20 tons for single-axle vehicles and 26 tons for tractor trailers. Following this project, the bridge’s weight limit posting is expected to be removed.

Fairview Road carries an average of 1,400 vehicles a day, according to a 2015 VDOT traffic count.
