VDOT REPLACES BRIDGE ON BAYNESVILLE ROAD IN WESTMORELAND COUNTY
Baynesville Rd. will be closed to through traffic for approximately eight weeks starting Monday, Sept. 18

FREDERICKSBURG  –  The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will soon begin work to replace a structurally deficient bridge over the Big Swamp on Route 642 (Baynesville Road) in Westmoreland County.

VDOT will close Baynesville Road near the bridge over the Big Swamp at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 18.  The bridge is located between Route 3 (Kings Highway) and Route 691(Northernmost Road).

A detour will be in place for approximately eight weeks, weather permitting, while construction is underway.

Signs will be posted along the recommended detour route, which is approximately nine miles:

  • Route 624 (Flat Iron Road)
  • Route 3 (Kings Highway)

Message boards will be posted next week to alert drivers to the upcoming bridge work and detour.

Crews will replace the existing steel beams, deck and guardrail with a 46-foot long concrete slab bridge on new concrete abutments, which will more than double the length of the current structure.

New bridge delineators will also be installed. Bridge delineators are small traffic signs to provide night reflection and help guide traffic along the new bridge.

Built in 1970, the existing bridge is a 22-foot long structure with a current weight limit posting of 20 tons for single-unit vehicles and 29 tons for tractor-trailers.  Following final inspection of the new bridge, the current weight posting is expected to be removed.

Baynesville Road carries an average of 190 vehicles a day, according to a 2016 VDOT traffic count.
