As construction advances at this intersection project in Spotsylvania County, traffic will shift slightly onto new pavement during overnight paving work

FREDERICKSBURG – Drivers traveling through the Route 1 and Harrison Road intersection in Spotsylvania County should stay alert for new traffic patterns this week as traffic is moved onto new pavement.

Drivers will encounter overnight lane closures on Route 1 northbound and southbound at the intersection from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through early Friday, June 30.

Route 1 northbound and southbound traffic at the intersection will be shifted slightly to the right onto new asphalt. Harrison Road westbound traffic will also be shifted slightly to the right onto new pavement in the future westbound lanes.

Drivers should follow direction from crews at the scene when traffic is shifted during the overnight hours. Signs and pavement markings will guide motorists through the new traffic pattern in the work zone.

Route 1 and Harrison Road traffic is shifting to provide space for crews to build a new median throughout the intersection.

Paving work is underway to apply an intermediate layer of asphalt to raise the road’s elevation and connect new and existing sections of road. Intermediate asphalt is applied before the final layer of asphalt is added at the end of the project.

The $22 million intersection project is building additional turn and through lanes, and extending existing turn lanes. Sidewalks and new lighting will be added at the intersection. The project will also upgrade traffic signal equipment to include pedestrian crossing features.

Construction began in May 2016 and will be completed by May 2018.
