SUFFOLK, Va-VDOT crews remain on the roads today salting, brining and plowing and they’ll continue to treat and clear roads throughout the day.

VDOT has implemented 12-hour shifts at all its residencies as crews and equipment will be working through the duration of the upcoming weather event. Pretreatment is underway on both the Southside and the Peninsula.

The Transportation Operations Center and Safety Service Patrollers (SSPs) will increase their staffs beginning this evening to monitor conditions and respond to calls for service.

VDOT will open a modified Area Command Center at the Transportation Operations Center in Virginia Beach beginning at 8 this evening.

The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry is on a normal operating schedule. All bridges, tunnels, overpasses and ramps are being checked for icy patches and travel advisories remain in effect at our bridges and tunnels.

Significant amounts of snow will fall overnight and into the morning rush hours, so if you don’t have to be on the roads, VDOT encourages you not to travel.   For those who have to venture out, use extreme caution, allow additional travel time and please give our trucks the right of way as they work to clear roads and interstates of snow and possible ice.

Here are a few driving tips:

  • Be mindful of potentially icy areas, including shaded roadways and bridges.
  • Don’t slam on brakes when traveling on ice.  Don’t make sudden turns causing you to spin out of control.
  • Don’t text and drive.  Messages can wait!

Motorists are encouraged to visit, call 511 or listen to Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) 1680 AM for the most current conditions and advisories.  Information is also available on Twitter @VaDOTHR.
