HAMPTON ROADS DISTRICT PREPARES FOR WINTER STORM
Motorists urged to stay off icy, snowy roads this weekend

SUFFOLK – VDOT’s Hampton Roads District will pre-treat roads throughout the region on Friday as it prepares for a potentially heavy snowfall this weekend and several days of freezing temperatures.

As of Thursday, crews across the District have made equipment checks, topped off salt and fuel supplies and notified additional personnel to be ready to work throughout the weekend. An Emergency Operations Center could be activated as early as Friday evening to monitor conditions and direct the District’s round-the-clock response. Forecasts from the National Weather Service are predicting snow to begin in the early morning hours Saturday and to increase in intensity after 7 a.m.

Motorists should stay off icy and snow-covered roads. VDOT’s pre-treatment helps prevent ice from bonding to the road and assists crews with snow and ice removal. However, even roads that have been pre-treated will still be slippery and hazardous when freezing temperatures combine with precipitation.

The National Weather Service is forecasting freezing temperatures to remain in Hampton Roads until early next week, a situation likely to make roads even more hazardous on Sunday, well after the snowfall has ended. It is VDOT’s goal to have all state-maintained roads passable within 48 hours after a storm ends, assuming there is no additional snowfall. Passable does not necessarily mean clear, however.

Motorists are encouraged to visit 511virginia.org or call 511 for up-to-date information on road and traffic conditions. Updates are also available by following the Hampton Roads District on Twitter at @VaDOTHR. For more information, visit VDOT's winter weather travel page.
