LYNCHBURG- Leonard “Lenny” Hodge, equipment repair technician II, has been selected as “Technician of the Year” for the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

The award is given in recognition of demonstrated professionalism, technical skills, certifications and credentials, education, innovation and enhancement of the technician profession.

Hodge has been a VDOT employee for 22 years and is an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified master technician; in addition, he is certified in state inspection and Tech 2 diagnostics. He has demonstrated a willingness to learn and adapt to new computer technology by becoming adept at using Allison, International and Caterpillar industry software to diagnose equipment issues.

Sharing the importance of technological savvy, Hodge said “Pretty much everything has a computer and modules that have to be programmed to the piece of equipment you are working on. It’s no more ‘put the part on and go’.”

In nominating Hodge for this honor, Mike Cobb, VDOT Lynchburg District shop supervisor said Hodge “is always willing to help new technicians and co-workers with unusual automotive problems...(he) always has a good attitude toward co-workers and is very knowledgeable with diagnostic equipment.”

Hodge was recently among the Top Twelve Technicians of the Year to be recognized by the Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP) at their annual meeting in Houston, TX and to be profiled in Equipment World magazine.

Outside of VDOT, Hodge is active at the New Hope Baptist Church in Appomattox.
