Public invited to submit comments about replacement project south of regional airport

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation invites the public to attend an upcoming public hearing to give comments on a bridge replacement project south of the Lynchburg Regional Airport on U.S. 29 North (Wards Road) in Campbell County.

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, June 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. in The Ramey Memorial Auditorium on VDOT’s Lynchburg District Complex, 4303 Campbell Ave. (U.S. 501), Lynchburg, VA. In case of inclement weather, the meeting will be held on June 29 at the same time and location.

The new structure, located slightly east of the existing bridge, will have 12-foot travel lanes and 4-foot bike accommodation. The Region 2000 Bike Plan identifies this section of U.S. 29 as a primary bike corridor.

Temporary lane closures will be in place during construction of tie-ins, crossover and entrances, placement of bridge beams and demolition of the existing structure; otherwise, two lanes of traffic will be maintained.

At the open house-style hearing, VDOT staff will be available to discuss the project and answer questions. The public can view renderings, ask questions and obtain information about the proposed project’s timeline, cost and travel impacts, as well as provide feedback on the project orally or in writing.

Written comments may also be submitted by mail to Renard Yeatts, Project Manager, 4219 Campbell Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24501 through June 30. Email comments can be sent to

Anyone requiring special assistance to attend and participate in this meeting may contact VDOT at 434-947-6559, 800-367-7623 or TTY/TDD 711.
