VDOT TO REPLACE HUNTER MILL ROAD BRIDGE
Lane closures begin next week; work will be complete in August
FAIRFAX ―Beginning next week, the Hunter Mill Road bridge over Difficult Run in Fairfax County will be reduced to one lane during non-rush hours while crews replace the bridge with a temporary truss bridge. The bridge is located between Hunter Station Road and Lawyers Road.
A recent annual inspection of the bridge revealed severe corrosion of the steel beams which cannot be repaired. Next week, surveyors, drill rigs, engineers and maintenance workers will be on site to obtain subsurface borings and other information needed to begin construction.
Crews will replace the bridge with a temporary panel truss. For one or two weekends in August, VDOT will need to close the bridge and detour traffic. VDOT will announce the dates of the weekend closures well in advance.
The weight restriction on the bridge is being reduced as a safety measure. Plans for a permanent bridge are being initiated and construction is targeted for summer 2012.
