FLASHING RED ARROWS COMING TO GALLOWS ROAD I-495 RAMP
New signal displays will go into effect July 18, will improve safety at intersection
ANNANDALE - The Virginia Department of Transportation will be implementing new flashing red right-turn arrows at the ramp from northbound I-495 to Gallows Road. The flashing arrows will allow drivers to turn right after stopping and yielding to all oncoming traffic. The new flashing red arrows are scheduled to go into operation the morning of Friday, July 18.
Drivers on the ramp currently encounter only one right-turn signal head with a steady red arrow, which means no turn is allowed until the signal changes to green. VDOT will add a second signal head to improve visibility for right-turning motorists, while the flashing arrows will help draw attention to the signal indications and provide a clear message to motorists that they may make a right turn on red after stopping.
The flashing arrows will be displayed when the adjacent through and left-turn signals on the ramp are displaying a steady red. Green right-turn arrows will be displayed when the left and through ramp signals display steady green.
