Give input on preliminary design plans to extend road south of Franconia-Springfield Parkway

SPRINGFIELD – The Virginia Department of Transportation is holding a public information meeting Thursday, Dec. 14 on plans to extend Frontier Drive from Franconia-Springfield Parkway (Route 289) to Loisdale Road in order to relieve congestion and improve access to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station, the Springfield Mall and Town Center area, and the General Services Administration (GSA) warehouse on Springfield Center Drive.

The project (location shown in map on right, with newly constructed roadway in blue and existing roadway in orange):

  • A four-lane divided roadway (combination of new construction and improvements to existing Springfield Center Drive) with bicycle lanes, as well as a shared-use path on one side and a sidewalk on the other side
  • Braided ramps at the Frontier Drive/Franconia-Springfield Parkway interchange
  • Improvements to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station loop road
  • Franconia-Springfield Metro station parking garage access improvements

The project is being financed with state, local and Northern Virginia Transportation Authority funding.

The public is invited to stop by between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Lee High School, 6540 Franconia Road, Springfield, VA 22150 to view displays and learn more about the project. VDOT staff will be available to answer questions.

Comments may be provided at the meeting or sent to VDOT by Dec. 27, 2017. E-mail or mail comments to Mr. Zamir Mirza, Virginia Department of Transportation, 4975 Alliance Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030.
