Plan for Delayed and Cautious Commutes
Be alert to refreeze, black ice, and winds this a.m.

FAIRFAX—(5 a.m.) Since several inches of snow and sleet stopped less than 24 hours ago, crews have worked non-stop to plow and treat interstates and main roads, commuter lots and almost all of the state’s 16,000 subdivision streets in northern Virginia. Crews plan to visit all neighborhood streets by 6 a.m. With frigid temperatures and high winds expected today, the Virginia Department of Transportation asks drivers to be aware of the following this a.m.:

  • Delay commutes until after sunrise or ideally mid-morning for better visibility and road temperatures.
  • Even if pavement looks clear, reduce speeds significantly, especially on high-speed roads. Black ice is a thin glaze that is difficult to see and almost impossible to stop on. Take it slow and allow plenty of extra time for your commute.
  • Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, and overpasses that will refreeze quickly.
  • Watch for areas where higher snow totals and winds have caused snow drifting, such as western Loudoun. Crews will continue to treat as needed.
  • Be alert to impacts from isolated snow showers through the day.

Before heading out, check road conditions and other resources:

  • Check 511virginia.org or the mobile app for traffic cams and road conditions
  • Follow @VaDOTNOVA on Twitter
  • Report issues to 800-FOR-ROAD (6723)
  • Visit virginiadot.org/novaemergency for all northern Virginia snow-related resources, including updates, FAQs, and links to releases, your neighborhood status, the customer service center and more.

VDOT’s Northern Virginia District includes Arlington*, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties. *Arlington maintains its own secondary roads.
