COLONIAL HEIGHTS — Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Commissioner of Highways, Greg Whirley, approved four contracts last week totaling approximately $9 million for Richmond District construction and maintenance.

Slurry Pavers Inc. of Glen Allen was awarded two contracts totaling $6.3 million for pavement resurfacing and sealing on various primary and secondary routes in the Richmond District. This work will take place during the 2012 paving season (spring through fall).

Abernathy Construction Corporation of Glen Allen was awarded a $1.8 million contract to replace the deficient Genito Road (Route 604) bridge over the Swift Creek Reservoir near Woolridge Road (Route 668) in Chesterfield County. The new bridge will have two 15-foot wide lanes with curb and gutter. The wider lanes can accommodate cyclists. A temporary traffic signal will be installed to allow traffic to alternate over the bridge during construction. Construction will begin later this month and completion is expected in December 2012.

Saffo Contractors Inc. of Wilmington, North Carolina was awarded an $895,000 contract to perform preventative maintenance on five interstate bridges in New Kent County and the cities of Richmond and Petersburg. Completion is expected in November 2012.
