I-95 WEEKEND BRIDGE WORK RESCHEDULED
Final Lombardy Street bridge replacements to begin 8 p.m. Oct. 4
COLONIAL HEIGHTS — After two consecutive weekends of I-95 Lombardy Street bridge replacements over the CSX Railroad in Richmond, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is rescheduling the third and final weekend to begin Oct. 4 rather than Sept. 27.
“Pushing the remaining Lombardy Street bridge replacements out to the following week allows the contractor more time to prepare their crews and equipment for the most challenging sections on this project,” said Scott Fisher, project manager. “The 10 bridge segments remaining span both the northbound and southbound lanes and will require multiple traffic shifts throughout the weekend.”
Drivers can expect I-95 traffic to be reduced to one travel lane in both directions at Lombardy Street (mile marker 77) from 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 through 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7. Due to expected traffic delays, I-95 travelers are strongly advised to use I-295 or another alternate route. Bridge replacement preparation work will continue weeknights and weekdays with the exception of morning and afternoon rush hour.
The 12-span Lombardy Street bridge is the largest and most complex of the 11 bridges for the I-95 Richmond Bridge Restorations project. The I-95 bridges over Upham Brook in Henrico County remain after the Lombardy Street bridge is completed. The project is currently ahead of schedule with completion expected in June 2014. The following eight bridges have been replaced:
- Laburnum Avenue
- Bridge over Boulevard exit ramp
- Hermitage Road
- Westwood Avenue
- Overbrook Road
- Sherwood Avenue
- Robin Hood Road
