Third and final weekend for Lombardy Street bridge replacements

COLONIAL HEIGHTS — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will resume Interstate 95 weekend bridge replacements at Lombardy Street in Richmond at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 as part of the I-95 Richmond Bridge Restorations project. During the third and final weekend for Lombardy Street bridge replacements, crews will replace the remaining 10 sections over the CSX Railroad. For drivers’ safety, I-95 traffic will merge to one lane in each direction at Lombardy Street (mile marker 77) through 6 a.m. Monday. Due to expected traffic delays, I-95 travelers are strongly advised to use I-295 or other alternate routes.

“These remaining bridge sections span the center of the highway and are directly over the railroad, making them the most challenging pieces to replace on this project,” said Scott Fisher, project manager. “In order to maintain one travel lane in each direction and give the crews room to work, traffic will be shifted multiple times throughout the weekend.”

Drivers can expect major delays along I-95 in Richmond between the I-64 east interchange (mile marker 75) and the Bryan Park/I-64 west interchange (mile marker 79). Additional delays are expected for travelers entering Richmond along I-64 west at the Shockoe Valley Bridge (mile marker 190) and I-64 east at the Bryan Park interchange (mile marker 186). Suggested alternate routes are as follows:

From I-95 south (Henrico): Access I-295 at exit 84 to reach I-64 east/west or areas south of Richmond; through travelers can use I-295 south to bypass Richmond and re-enter I-95 south at exit 46 in Prince George County. Local traffic can also take exit 82 (Chamberlayne Avenue/Route 1/301 south) to reach Richmond destinations.

From I-95 north (Prince George): Access I-295 at exit 46 to reach I-64 east/west or areas north of Richmond; through travelers can use I-295 north to bypass Richmond and re-enter I-95 north at exit 84 in Henrico County.

From I-64 east (Goochland/Henrico): There are three alternate routes:

  • Access Route 288 south at exit 175 in Goochland to reach Chesterfield County locations and to re-enter I-95 at exit 62
  • Access I-295 at exit 177 to reach I-95 north or I-64 east of Richmond
  • Access I-195 south at exit 186 in Richmond to reach downtown destinations, Route 76/Powhite Parkway Extension (toll) through Chesterfield County or the Downtown Expressway (toll).

From I-64 west (Henrico/New Kent): Access I-295 north at exit 200 to reach I-95 or to continue on to I-64 west of Richmond.

To keep traffic moving, VDOT’s Safety Service Patrol will operate around the clock on I-95 in the vicinity of the work zone during the weekend bridge replacements. In addition, electronic message signs will display estimated travel times through the work zone and recommend Richmond through travelers use I-295.

The 12-span Lombardy Street bridge is the largest and most complex of the 11 bridges for the I-95 Richmond Bridge Restorations project. The I-95 bridges over Upham Brook in Henrico County remain after the Lombardy Street bridge is completed. The project is currently ahead of schedule with completion expected in June 2014. The following eight bridges have been replaced:

  • Laburnum Avenue
  • Bridge over Boulevard exit ramp
  • Boulevard
  • Hermitage Road
  • Westwood Avenue
  • Overbrook Road
  • Sherwood Avenue
  • Robin Hood Road
