NEW TRAFFIC CONFIGURATION IN PLACE FOR NEW KENT ROUNDABOUT
Use extra caution; traffic will be temporarily guided by barrels
NEW KENT – Construction is progressing on the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)’s roundabout project at the intersection of New Kent Highway (Route 249) and Tunstall Road/Airport Road (Route 612) in New Kent County. Traffic will be shifted into a roundabout configuration beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, February 6. Drivers should use extra caution traveling through the new traffic pattern, as vehicles will be temporarily guided by orange barrels while crews work to install the permanent concrete islands and other roundabout traffic devices. The speed limit at the intersection has also been permanently reduced to 20 mph.
Drivers should use the following tips in the new traffic pattern:
- Follow signs and pavement markings for your safety
- Slow down when approaching the roundabout
- Yield to traffic already in the roundabout
- As you enter the roundabout, keep right and drive in the counter-clockwise direction. Do not turn left when entering a roundabout
- Do not change lanes or stop when in the roundabout
Construction began spring 2015 to improve this intersection and is expected to be complete by May 2017. The project will improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection and provide capacity for bicycle and pedestrian travel.
