VDOT CREATES VIDEO TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF VALLEY VIEW DIVERGING DIAMOND COMING TO ROANOKE IN SPRING 2016
SALEM – The Virginia Department of Transportation has produced a short video segment to increase awareness about a new type of interchange coming to the Valley View Mall area in spring 2016. The diverging diamond interchange (DDI), an innovative approach in traffic engineering, is currently under construction on Interstate 581 at Valley View Boulevard. It will be the second interchange of its kind to open in Virginia.
“We wanted a fun, creative and attention-grabbing way to inform drivers and to address some of their concerns about the new traffic pattern coming at the interchange, so we reached out to movie goers who drive at Valley View and developed a video recognizing the appeal of the upcoming Star Wars movie,” said Jason Bond, communications manager for VDOT’s Salem District.
The minute-long video segment will appear in the local movie theater during previews from late November 2015 until March 2016. The video also can be viewed by visiting VDOT’s Twitter page @VaDOTSalem, VDOT’s website www.virginiadot.org/ValleyView or on VDOT’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nCYFOSfzsQ.
A DDI is unusual in that it requires motorists to briefly drive on the left side of the road or the opposite side of the road from where they normally do. The interchange has pavement markings and traffic signals just like a regular intersection to help drivers navigate it.
When driving a DDI, motorists proceed through a traffic signal and simply follow their lane to the opposite side of the roadway. Then, drivers turning left can turn without having to cross a lane of oncoming traffic.
The DDI originated in France and was listed by Popular Science magazine in 2009 as one of the best innovations in engineering. MCP
