TRAFFIC ALERT: WEEKEND CLOSURE OF SOUTHGATE DRIVE SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 30 BEFORE ROUNDABOUT OPENING
New traffic circle at Southgate Drive and Duck Pond Drive expected to open Sunday, October 2
SALEM – Weather permitting, a weekend closure of Southgate Drive on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg is planned from Friday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. until sometime on Sunday, Oct. 2, in advance of a new roundabout opening at the intersection of Southgate Drive and Duck Pond Drive.
Southgate Drive will be closed at its intersections with Route 460 and Research Center Drive/Beamer Way. Duck Pond Drive also will be closed at the last entrance to the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine Hospital.
Drivers will need to use Prices Fork Road, Research Center Drive or Main Street to access the Virginia Tech campus. Drivers accessing the veterinary medicine hospital are recommended to use Prices Fork Road to Duck Pond Drive.
During the weekend closure, construction crews will remove old pavement markings, paint new lines and install signs prior to the new roundabout opening. In addition, a crane will be in the area to drive steel beams in the ground for temporary shoring needed for construction of a new pedestrian underpass beneath Southgate Drive.
The new roundabout is expected to open to traffic sometime on Sunday, October 2. Drivers should be alert to the change in traffic pattern and pay attention to signs.
To use a traffic circle, motorists should slowdown as they approach and yield to traffic already in the roundabout
Roundabouts are considered to be safer and move traffic more efficiently than tradition intersections.
