SALEM DISTRICT: ROAD CREWS WORKING ON MAIN ROADS
Drivers urged to avoid travel

SALEM – Snow plow operators and contractors with the Virginia Department of Transportation are actively engaged in plowing and treating interstates, primary routes (those numbered 1-599) and some major secondary routes throughout western Virginia as snow continues to fall.

Roads in western Virginia are snow covered and extremely slick, so VDOT urges motorists to avoid travel.

Drivers are reminded that snowplow operators will work on primary routes (those numbered 1-599) until winter weather has ended and these major roads are plowed and treated before any work begins on secondary roads (those numbered above 600) and neighborhood streets.

With extremely low temperatures continuing into next week, snow will freeze and is expected to remain on many surfaces until temperatures rise.

With a light and powdery snow, drifting may also be a challenge with this storm.

Traffic and road condition information can be obtained by dialing 511 or visiting www.511Virginia.org

The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke.
